London Public Library: Masonville Branch

Masonville Branch

  The Masonville Library Branch is located near my apartment in London,ON and is actually the only branch in the area that I have explored. Masonville is a small branch library, but the space is used very well and the library includes many amenities and services for every patron's use.

I asked a woman behind the circulation desk if I was allowed to take pictures inside of the library.  She agreed as long as I did not include any workers or patrons in my photos.  This was on a weekday morning and to my surprise the library was busy.  Therefore the pictures featured in my blog were taken strategically (to avoid photographing people) and unfortunately do not capture all of the components of this branch.

As a small branch library, Masonville cannot hold a large collection, yet the library manages to feature a variety of subject matter within the books that are shelved here. Extensive young adult and children's sections contribute greatly to the atmosphere of this library. There were many young children with their parents on this particular morning, participating in a story time event.

The circulation desk area includes 3 self check-out computer stations.  I thought this was appropriate since a smaller branch means a smaller staff, and the self check-out stations allow patrons to be more independent while allowing library staff to focus their attention on other tasks.  There are also internet workstations located throughout the library for patrons' use.

Leisure Area

The library also includes a couple of small leisure areas with chairs and coffee tables.  There is a wall display with all the latest newspaper and magazine publications. Audiobooks, CDs and DVDs are also available for loan. One of my favourite features of Masonville library is the community events board that is located inside the front entrance. This board includes posters and information for upcoming events in the area as well as events that will be taking place throughout the London Public Library branches.

From the first time that I visited this branch I liked it. After every visit I like it a little more. I feel comfortable in this library and enjoy that it is a small  library branch.  Even when there are many patrons present the library does not seem crowded (hey I managed to avoid photographing everybody).
